Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued a fiery statement on President Joe Biden's “lawlessness” at the southern border in a statement on Wednesday.
Abbott accused Biden of violating his constitutional duty to enforce federal immigration laws and protect states, stressing that Texas has the right to defend itself against the “invasion” of illegal immigrants crossing the border.
He cited the state's “right to self-defense” and outlined his constitutional authority to do so, saying it “supersedes any federal laws to the contrary.”
“The executive branch of the United States has a constitutional duty to enforce the federal laws that protect the states, including the immigration laws currently on the books,” Abbott wrote.
He added: “President Biden refused to enforce these laws, and even violated them.”

Abbott and Texas pledge to hold the line
Abbott's statement criticizing President Biden comes on the heels of a recent Supreme Court ruling allowing federal agents to remove razor wire that Texas installed at the border.
However, Abbott cited the country's founding fathers in asserting that the Lone Star State would not be bullied into backing down.
“The visionaries who wrote the United States Constitution predicted that the states should not be left at the mercy of a lawless president who does nothing to stop foreign threats like cartels smuggling millions of illegal immigrants across the border,” he added.
Earlier this week, the Supreme Court, by a 5-4 vote, approved an emergency request filed by the Biden administration arguing that Texas is preventing federal agents from carrying out their duties.
The ruling allows federal agents to cut or remove razor wire used to defend the Texas border.
But Abbott and the Texas National Guard were undeterred, saying they would “stand firm” in the face of the federal government.
The State Guard said in a statement: “We remain resolute in our measures to secure our borders, maintain the rule of law, and protect the sovereignty of our state.”
Some Democrats have argued that President Biden should forcefully impose control over the Texas National Guard, something Abbott's statement confirms supersedes his state's right to self-defense.

Texas now offers razor wire to private property owners
Not content with merely holding the line, Abbott and the state of Texas have become proactive in their battle to secure the southern border.
Mike Banks, Texas state border coordinator, told ranchers this week that the state would readily install razor wire on their private property at no charge.
The ongoing back-and-forth razor wire dispute has gone on for some time, and the Biden administration appears to have gotten the final say in the Supreme Court's ruling.
But Abbott appears to be taking a page from the president's book and ignoring it.
Federal agents have already been seen cutting wires in several previous cases.
If there is any clear perception of who the enemy of the American people is, it is that the federal government is coming to open the door that the red state governor has closed.
Imagine what you could do if someone kept coming to your house and leaving criminals at the front door. You will invoke the right of self-defense.
