Houston – I spent some time with Dr. Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the UCLA Environment and Sustainability Institute. He spoke at Operation Sierra Storm, a weather conference held in South Lake Tahoe, California. We discussed what he calls “weather strike.” How a warmer world is leading to more extreme weather events Houston is ground zero, he said. Here is his interview. Please let me know what you think below or at: @kprc2anthony on X, Facebook or Instagram.

Swain is a climate scientist who focuses on the dynamics and impacts of extreme events—including droughts, floods, storms, and wildfires—on a warming planet. He holds joint appointments as a research scientist at the UCLA Environment and Sustainability Institute, a research fellow at the Center for Climate and Extreme Weather Capacity at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, and as a California Climate Fellow at The Nature Conservancy. It engages extensively with journalists and other partners, and serves as a climate and weather science liaison with print, radio, television and web media to facilitate accurate, widely accessible coverage surrounding climate change and the broader Earth system. Swain is a graduate of the University of California, Davis (BSc, Atmospheric Sciences) and Stanford University (PhD, Earth System Sciences), and completed his postdoctoral work at UCLA. He is also the author of the Weather West blog (weatherwest.com), which provides real-time views on weather and climate in California and western North America, and can be found on X, formerly Twitter (@Weather_West).
