Weather in America: January 16, 2024

FOX Weather has you covered with breaking forecasts and weather headlines for the weather in America on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Get the latest news from FOX Meteorologist Kiana Lewis.

Welcome to FOX Weather's daily weather update. It's Tuesday, January 16, 2024. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick summary of national, regional and local weather whenever you want with the FOX Weather Update podcast.

Snow-free lines end in the Northeast as falling snow slows the morning commute along the I-95 corridor

After nearly two years without an inch of snow in a single day, Philadelphia and Baltimore finally ended their record snow-free streaks after accumulating snow covered the Interstate 95 corridor overnight Monday and into early Tuesday morning.

New York City hadn't received an inch as of the pre-dawn hours Tuesday, but the Big Apple could also end its 700-day snow-free streak as wintry weather continues to spread across the Northeast.

Winter Weather Advisories have been issued across the region as 2-5 inches of snow is expected to bring about smooth morning and evening commutes.

A deadly blast in the Arctic has triggered wind chill advisories from the Canadian border to the Gulf Coast

Bitter cold air continues to move south out of Canada, taking over much of the United States as far south as the Gulf Coast. This Arctic blast is dropping temperatures as much as 40-50 degrees below average for millions of Americans. Nearly half the country is under some form of wind chill advisory, extending from the US-Canadian border to the US-Mexico border.

Dangerous cold, frostbite, and hypothermia pose serious threats to anyone caught out in the elements. According to a report from FOX 12 in Portland, Oregon, at least two people have died from a cold-related illness. According to the report, a man was found dead in East/Northeast Portland on Friday, and a second man was found dead in Northwest Portland on Saturday. Three more cold weather deaths occurred in the Milwaukee area over the weekend, FOX 6 in Milwaukee reported.

A winter storm turns deadly in Arkansas, Mississippi as the South suffers from snow and ice

The combination of cold air from the Arctic Front and rising moisture from the nation's southern jet stream has driven a major winter weather event from Texas across the Appalachian Mountains over the past few days. Persistent snow and ice could still create slippery roads and cause travel issues in parts of the Southeast on Tuesday before the system moves out of the area later in the day.

At least two people have been reported dead due to this winter storm — one in Arkansas on Sunday afternoon and one in Mississippi on Sunday evening. Both deaths were the result of weather-related accidents.
