Hurricane season officially ends on November 30, so it's only natural that the tropics begin to calm down at this time of year. But this does not mean that they are silent. A new area in the southwestern Caribbean Sea is being monitored for potential tropical development. The National Hurricane Center said a broad area of low pressure could develop by the middle of next week, and some gradual development is possible after that as it meanders over the southwestern Caribbean Sea.
A welcome weekend to the dry South
Drought has worsened across much of the South, according to new data from the U.S. Drought Monitor. A cold front moving through the region this weekend will provide a small amount of relief for some places, but not all. The bulk of the rain is expected to fall along the coasts of Texas and Louisiana, with smaller amounts falling in Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia.
Possibility of increasing the “historically strong” El Niño phenomenon
El Niño is already strong, but the chances of it becoming stronger are increasing. According to a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) update, the probability of a “historically strong” event, also known as a super El Niño, has risen to 35%. This pattern has a major impact on the type of weather the United States experiences during the fall and winter seasons.
