London: British media reported on Sunday that Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, had been diagnosed with a type of skin cancer, another health problem suffered by a member of the British royal family.

Ferguson, 64, who was married to Prince Andrew, was treated for breast cancer last year and was diagnosed with malignant melanoma after several moles were removed.

Her spokesperson said: “Her dermatologist requested that several moles be removed and analyzed at the same time as the Duchess was undergoing reconstructive surgery following a mastectomy, and one of these moles was determined to be cancerous.”

“It is undergoing further investigations to ensure this is caught in the early stages.

“The further diagnosis so soon after breast cancer treatment has obviously been distressing, but the Duchess remains in good spirits.”

Ferguson, known as Fergie, spoke about the importance of coming forward for cancer screenings after initial breast cancer surgery.

Her new diagnosis was reported as King Charles, 75, prepares to have a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate this week.

Royal officials also announced Wednesday that Catherine, wife of Charles' heir Prince William, underwent successful abdominal surgery and will remain in hospital for up to two weeks.
