The authorities in the Dominican Republic confiscated a huge amount of food for the Spanish singer after examining him upon his arrival at Punta Cana airport.
Legendary Spanish singer Julio Iglesias was briefly arrested this week at Punta Cana Airport in the Dominican Republic for carrying a large amount of food in his luggage.
According to Spanish media, Iglesias was arrested with 42 kilograms of all kinds of fruits, vegetables and meat in his bags, starting with strawberries, cherries, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce and mushrooms.
Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia reported that the 80-year-old singer regularly travels with copious amounts of food in his luggage.
It is understood he arrived in the Dominican capital on January 10 from the Bahamas.
Several kilograms of food were confiscated and the singer was only detained briefly, but he could have been detained for longer if he had been caught carrying too much produce.
Regulatory rules and laws
According to the Dominican newspaper Diary list Quoting the Ministry of Agriculture, the decision was taken to avoid any spread of parasites from abroad that could harm local crops. “It's not about him or anyone in particular, it's about everyone,” Dominican Agriculture Minister Limbert Cruz said.
The Dominican daily says that these inspections have intensified since the intermittent incursions of the Mediterranean fly, whose presence has been accurately detected in Punta Cana.
