““Success is not final, and failure is not fatal, but it is the courage to continue that matters.”“

This was the quote, purportedly from Winston Churchill, used by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis video On Sunday, he announced the suspension of his presidential candidacy from the Republican Party.

One problem: Churchill obviously never said that.

The International Churchill Society, which celebrates the “timeless values” of the famous prime minister who led Great Britain during World War II, said it could find “no attribution” for Churchill's statement.

“We base this on careful research into a corpus of fifty million words written by and about Churchill, including all of his books, articles, speeches and research,” the organization said in a blog post, referring to a separate misquotation of the same phrase in a blog post. 2013.

The group said the quote was “widely and incorrectly attributed” to Churchill, and added that a number of online sources also attribute the saying to Abraham Lincoln, although there is no evidence of the phrase in the Lincoln archives either.

The group said in a blog post: “These fake quotes make good stories, but popular legend wrongly attributed them to Winston Churchill.”

One of Churchill's quotes was: “Success always requires greater effort.”

The DeSantis campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment on why the quote was used.
