Jim White – Veteran drummer known for his work with the bands Dirty Three, Venom P. Stinger, Xyluris White, and Springtime, as well as playing with artists such as Cat Power, Mary Margaret O'Hara, PJ Harvey, Bill Callahan, and Bonnie “Prince” Billy – He announced his first ever solo album. All visits: Memories It will be released on March 29 via Drag City, and will be led by the single “Names Make the Name.” Watch Tran and Masami Tomihisa's video for the song below.
White is designed and produced All visits: Memories With Guy Picciotto (Fugazi/Rites of Spring), who also co-wrote six of the 13 songs. “This is long overdue,” Bill Callahan wrote in a statement accompanying the announcement. “I mean, it's long overdue. Jim's solo album. He continued:
Trap Set – Very clear and very mysterious. What's inside those things? Air and light – from what century? Which continent? Depending on how and when you hit them, it could be a vibration sent through your prehistoric breath…the wet dead leaves you walked through on your way to the first day of school. These are the memories of the drums on this record. Infinite and personal. They release each other as they muscle forward or soft shoe into the shadow. Drums are the instrument through which you can feel the player's presence more – his whole body – and feel the player's thoughts more. The tool with the largest number of choices sends the largest number of brainwaves. There's a bunch of brainwaves on this LP.
Jim oversees everything, the polls from the lost place we're in, and the void – the song without the drums. We trust. We trust, Jim. His big green eyes are searching for the right tool (hammer, brush, etc.), his eyes are searching for you like you are a song he wants to join in, wanting to see if he can add to it or understand it.
Before humans, drums were played – these drums. Genesis was a solo drum piece. After Humans, these drums, this album. Someone – The Last Man – is in a spaceship at the edge of space. He plays one string on an instrument to free time from its binding and then lets it go. This album frees up time, allows it to have fun, allows it to nurture, and allows it to remember.
This is a record of thoughts, memories and surgery. An ingenious surgical procedure that you may not realize is happening while it's happening but you'll be back on your feet when it's over. Refreshing memories.
