According to Democratic Senator John Fetterman, the border crisis threatens to destroy the American dream as another 300,000 people approach the southern border.
Dailymail.com reports,
Fetterman expressed concerns about the ongoing immigration crisis and called for a “secure border” while speaking with CNN anchor Jake Tapper on Friday.
“I honestly don't understand why saying we need secure borders is so controversial,” the 54-year-old Democratic senator from Pennsylvania said.
'And [what] I think immigration is that we want to provide the American dream to any immigrant. “However, it seems very difficult when you have 300,000 people showing up at our borders to make that happen.”
His statements come as US Customs and Border Patrol documented more than 302,000 attempts to cross the US southern border in December, the highest total ever recorded in a single month in history.
On Friday's show, Fetterman, whose wife arrived in the United States undocumented at age 7, touted the benefits of legal immigration.
I was very clear that, in fact, it was being used as a weapon against me [by] “Republicans in my race, I'm a strong supporter of immigration, and you know, my wife's family, that's the original story on that,” he added.
But he questioned why progressive critics on the left have problems with his pro-border security stance.
He responded to Tapper's question: “I honestly don't understand, why do you think you've been criticized by so many progressives?”
“And I think two things can be true at the same time. You can be very supportive of immigration, but we also need to have secure borders.”
In recent weeks, Fetterman has broken with his party's far left by showing strong support for Israel since the October 7 Hamas attack.
He also stated that the United States should tighten its southern border policy, a position that some on the left believe is inhumane.
