A cat died in Russia after its driver threw it from a train.

The white and ginger cat, Twix, was traveling with his owners when he escaped from his cage and was thrown from the cart by a female employee, according to local media reports.

He believes she was mistaken for a stray.

“We deeply regret the death of Twix the cat,” state-owned railway company RZD said in a statement.

After the incident that occurred on January 11 in Western Kirov RussiaTwix owners raised the alarm, launching a Telegram channel to coordinate a search team of hundreds of volunteers.

They scoured the area in temperatures of -30 C (-22 F) and eventually found Twix's body.

A petition signed by more than 70,000 people is now calling for criminal charges to be brought against the train conductor. Local authorities have not opened a case yet.
