The group has been classified as a terrorist organization by Tehran and Washington.
The two countries exchanged accusations of providing safe havens and turning a blind eye to attacks launched by militants.

Over the years, the organization has intensified its attacks on Iranian individuals and sites. Its members are said to be closely linked to Kurdish separatists in Iran.
Iran accused Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the United States of supporting the group.
For the first time in many years, the armies of the two countries attacked each other deep within their territories.
This has jeopardized relations between Iran and Pakistan, as they share a 900-kilometre border.
