PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — When will the ice start melting? That's the question on the minds of many Portlanders, and sadly the answer is “not soon enough.”

Snow is melting quickly south of the Portland metro area. Unfortunately, cold temperatures are still holding in for much of metro Portland as the Strait continues to flow in arctic air.

Full list: Weather alerts across the region

With rain falling over the rest of Oregon and parts of southwest Washington, freezing rain is possible Thursday evening in the Portland metro.

Icy conditions continue to keep much of the area icy with many roads remaining on the slick side.

Skies are expected to remain icy Thursday morning on back roads and side streets, while it will be relatively clear on main roads.

Temperatures will be in the mid to upper 30s in the Portland metro area, but could change quickly later Thursday.

Thursday afternoon road conditions will not improve as much by then, when another round of freezing rain could arrive as cold winds blow from the valley.

Temperatures are expected to hover near or below freezing in Portland with easterly winds. Freezing precipitation on the ground will help refreeze rain on the surface through Friday morning.
