Keep this snow shovel handy. Forecasters expect another 1 to 4 inches of snow to fall in the Capital Region on Friday to end a work week that began with the heaviest snowfall the region has seen in two years.
The snow is expected to start falling early in the morning, according to 7News First Alert Senior Meteorologist Veronica Johnson.
Johnson said: “There will be a decrease in snowfall amounts, and significant impacts on the region’s roads, throughout Friday, until Saturday morning, with temperatures expected to drop.” “By 5 a.m., we'll be snowing around the area the way it looks now, and it will continue until 8 p.m. That's when the snowfall will end. … Again, we're expecting between 1 and about 4 inches of snowfall.”
Johnson said the snow will start to fall around 2 p.m
The National Weather Service expects up to an inch of snow in the capital, with more snow accumulating in suburbs to the north and west.
D.C. has a 24% chance of seeing more than 2 inches of snow, according to the NWS, and only a 1% chance of seeing more than 4 inches. Meanwhile, Frederick County, Maryland, has a 53% chance of more than 2 inches. In Oakland, Maryland, the NWS predicts there is a 50% chance of more than 8 inches.
Snow will accumulate on top of the remnants of Monday's snowstorm, which brought accumulations of 2-6 inches to the area. The area got about 4 inches on Monday, but some parts of Fairfax County, Virginia, and Montgomery County, Maryland, exceeded 5 inches.
A noticeable amount of that snow has been stuck around due to the cold temperatures that moved in after the snowfall, and Friday's system will be no different.
“Stormy conditions throughout the weekend with highs in the mid 20s on Saturday, low 30s on Sunday,” Johnson said. “Temperatures are very cold on Saturday – get those gloves and something warm again – single digits all day long.”
Saturday's cold temperatures could bring another “hard freeze” and bring more challenging conditions for D.C. area drivers to end the week.
