There is no talk of Matthew Stafford retiring after the Rams' season was cut short by his former team, the Lions.
The marriage between Matthew Stafford and the Los Angeles Rams was off to the perfect start. But after a few tough seasons, is Stafford ready to move on, or maybe even hang up his boots? That doesn't seem to be the case, despite Sunday's heartbreaking season finale.
“That's my plan now, yeah, “My plan is to come back,” Stafford commented when asked about his future with the Rams, courtesy of Jordan Rodrigue of The Athletic.
“And you'll have to deal with me for another year!”
An emotional Stafford returned to Detroit on Sunday to face the team that first drafted him in 2009. In a thrilling game, Stafford's old team took down his new team, 24-23. Despite the new kit, Stafford has shown some of his trademark toughness.
The midfielder suffered a hand injury that drew blood and a bone-crushing blow, forcing him into the blue medical tent to be assessed before returning to the game.
After 15 seasons and countless injuries, it was worth wondering if a tough loss in a homecoming game of sorts made Stafford think about his future.
Stafford, Rams aren't done chasing trophies
When Stafford asked to be traded by the Lions before the 2021 season, his desire to have the playoff success he didn't have in Detroit was his top priority.
Mission accomplished, as his first season with the Rams ended with him collecting the Vince Lombardi Trophy, on the team's home court.
But the team had a miserable follow-up season, winning just five games. 2023 was viewed as another rebuilding season for Sean McVay's team, with expectations not particularly high.
But the surprise playoff appearance may have energized Stafford and given him enough reason to bring him back in 2024 as he and the Rams chase another ring.
