OpenAI is relaxing its ban on military use of its AI technology

Leading AI research company OpenAI has dramatically changed its usage policies, allowing more flexibility for military applications of its technology. The company announced the update on January 10 with little fanfare or explanation.

From comprehensive ban to specific ban

Previously, OpenAI imposed a strict ban on the use of its technology in any “activity involving a high risk of physical harm, including” “weapons development” and “military and warlike actions.” This would prevent any government or military agency from using OpenAI services for defense or security purposes. However, the new policy removed the general prohibition on “military and warlike” use. Instead, it listed some specific examples of prohibited use cases, such as “developing or using weapons” or “harming yourself or others.”
