In the modern era, cities around the world face a variety of challenges that cannot be overcome using traditional methods. Tokyo also addresses global urban issues such as those related to the environment, disaster resilience, and finance by combining cutting-edge technology, digital expertise, and a new perspective gained from learning from the past. At the heart of this effort lies the SusHi Tech Tokyo concept.
SusHi Tech Tokyo is derived from the concept of sustainable High City Tech in Tokyo. First, it reinterprets the art of sushi, which traditionally elevates seasonal ingredients into a cultural delicacy, through craftsmanship and skill. It then outlines the desire to create “new sustainable value” through cutting-edge technologies and share it with the world, starting from Tokyo.
One of the initiatives that embodies this ambition is the Tokyo Bay eSG project, which the city announced in 2021. This project aims to build a sustainable city, even 50 or 100 years from now. It does this by reevaluating city structure and societal norms to overcome crises.
The project covers about 1,000 hectares including the sub-coastal center and the central breakwater area in the south. With the proximity of facilities related to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games and a balanced mix of work, accommodation, education and leisure functions, along with a world-class logistics terminal, this project is ideally located for implementation.
By taking advantage of this environment, the goal is to achieve zero emissions through digital technology. Taking advantage of the waterfront location overlooking the sea and canals, the project plans to develop parks and green spaces while meeting all energy requirements using renewable energy centered around hydrogen.
A global model city pioneering new values
The “eSG” part of the project name includes not only the original concepts of ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance), but also refers to concepts such as the environment and economics, as well as “New Era-making” endeavors. The desired image of the city is summed up in this name.
The first major target is set to be achieved in 2030.
