New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Saturday that the Wild Card game between the Steelers and Buffalo Bills, which was scheduled for Sunday, will be moved to Monday afternoon amid forecasts of dangerous winter weather. Known on Twitter, she has been consulting with emergency personnel, the draft and the NFL about the matter. The NFL and Bills issued a statement citing “public safety concerns” as the reason for postponing the game by one day. The Steelers were scheduled to face the Bills at Highmark Stadium on Sunday at 1 p.m., however, the weather forecast in Buffalo on Friday forced the Bills to ask for volunteers to shovel snow before the game. The weather forecast for the Buffalo area called for heavy snow. Winds will reach 65 mph (105 km/h) on Saturday, with snow accumulating from one foot to two feet or more eventually. The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning lasting until 7 a.m. Monday, saying that “travel will be very difficult or impossible at times,” with a combination of snow and extremely strong winds causing almost zero visibility. Much of the storm was expected to be concentrated in a narrow band of lake-effect snow hovering over Buffalo's southern suburbs, which includes the Bills' home in Orchard Park. The Steelers will now face the Bills on Monday at 4:30 p.m., Hochul said. Hochul also announced a “complete travel ban” in Erie County, where Buffalo is the county seat, starting Saturday at 9 p.m. “The conditions are going to be horrific,” Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said at a news conference in suburban Buffalo. The Steelers have postponed their travel plans and will now head to Buffalo on Sunday. The Bills are aware of weather-related schedule changes. In 2022, a lake effect storm moved Buffalo's home game against Cleveland to Detroit in November. A month later, a massive snowstorm forced the Bells to delay their flight home, forcing them to stay the night in Chicago on Christmas Eve. This is a developing story.
