Even as President Biden fanes the flames of “Democracy is at Risk” in an attempt to boost sagging poll numbers, Americans are decidedly less satisfied with how democracy is working under his administration than they were in the days after January 6th.
In a recent Gallup poll, a record number of Americans expressed their dissatisfaction with the way democracy works in the United States.
The poll, based on results collected in December, revealed that only 28% of US adults are satisfied with democracy, a significant decline from the previous record of 35% measured shortly after the Capitol riot.
Both numbers are significantly lower than polls in previous years that asked the same question. But President Biden, who often portrays himself as the candidate who saved democracy and will continue to save it, should be surprised to see that Americans do not believe the rhetoric.
“Americans are preparing to elect the next president at a time when they are less happy about the state of American democracy than at any time in at least 40 years,” Gallup said.

Poll suggests more Americans are concerned about democracy under Biden
As the poll indicates, Americans' dissatisfaction with democracy is not limited to one political party or ideology. It's a broad sentiment that extends across the political spectrum.
Yes, Republicans are the least satisfied with how democracy is working under President Biden. Prosecution of your favorite presidential candidate by the president and his Justice Department will do that.
21% of Republicans were unhappy with the days after January 6, 2021. Their concerns about the election process were the entire reason for the protests at the time, so it makes sense.
In the current poll, only 17% are likely to say they are satisfied with the state of democracy. There's not much change.
Perhaps even more striking is the fact that independent and Democratic voters have seen a much greater decline in their faith in democracy since January 6th.
36% of independents expressed their satisfaction with 2021, compared to 27% in the current version of the survey.
47% of Democrats were satisfied with how democracy works in 2021, compared to 38% today. Why, tell me, would this be the case? President Biden saved democracy, right?

Biden is dangerous for democracy
In the eyes of Democrats, the January 6 riot at the Capitol was virtually the end of democracy and the United States as we know it. Former President Donald Trump was the mastermind behind these efforts, according to their calculations.
So imagine how distraught they and the sitting president were when they learned that democracy in Joe Biden's America was viewed as less secure.
President Biden recently claimed that January 6 was “the day we almost lost America — we lost everything.”
Former President Barack Obama said that Trump returning to the White House after the 2024 presidential election would be “very dangerous for democracy.”
However, people were more satisfied with “the way democracy works” when Trump was president and cast doubt on the election than they are under the current administration.
