The new Longmont Fire Department station has room to grow at 2212 17th Ave.
According to a Facebook post from Longmont Public Safety, crews finished moving into the new station Wednesday morning.
The new Longmont Fire Department station has one engine and is designed to house future ambulance crews. Reserve vehicles and specialized units will also be housed at this location.
The stations cost about $9 million to build, according to Patrick Kramer, Longmont's public information officer. The cost of acquiring the property and building the new facilities was financed through the sale of municipal bonds It was approved by Longmont voters in 2018. Longmont Fire announced the construction of a new fire station in April 2022.
The new fire station has more space, said Kerry Sheehan, Longmont's senior project manager.
“Firefighting equipment has changed over the years, and the current fire stations were too small for the old fire station,” Sheehan said. “The new station has more space for search and rescue equipment, allowing the city to put all of its equipment in one place.”
Sheehan provided some background on why fire department officials are asking voters to approve funding for a new station.
Shehan said: “(The old station) was built in 1967. At that time, the city was smaller, and the equipment was smaller…”
The Longmont Fire Department also plans to add a new training classroom to the former station, Sheehan said.
