HOOVER, Ala. (WIAT) – Head coach Nick Saban's impact on college football is undeniable, but he's also had a huge impact on high school football in Alabama.
Thompson High School football coach Mark Freeman says Saban set the standard in football. He enjoyed attending coaching clinics hosted by Saban during his tenure at Alabama.
“The knowledge he gave us and our players, you can feed that back,” Freeman said.
Hoover High School football coach Drew Gilmer said he considers Saban one of the greatest coaches of all time.
“He has a great personality, the kids love him, everyone who has worked and played with him has the highest regard for him, and he is the best at doing it,” Gilmer said.
As the University of Alabama now begins the process of finding a new head coach, both coaches say it's important to select the ideal candidate when it comes to high school recruiting.
“Being in the middle of NIL and Gateway, they had to open their eyes and get the right person who saw the future,” Freeman said.
“It doesn't have to be someone from Alabama, but it has to be someone who can handle that big scoop for the job because this is a huge job,” Gilmer said.
The University of Alabama is set to announce its new head football coach within the next few days.
