The forecast is improving for Friday, but severe weather is still possible in Troup County

Published at 1:48 PM Thursday, January 11, 2024

Troup County isn't out of the woods, but Friday's weather forecast has improved a bit, at least in terms of where our area stands on the National Weather Service's severe weather scale.

On Wednesday, much of central Georgia was at increased risk for severe weather. Now, according to the NWS Storm Prediction Center, Troup County and almost all of Georgia has been downgraded to a slight risk, a 2 out of 5 on the severe weather scale.

However, the risk of hurricanes and high winds remains.

“Severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong gusts, some with wind speeds of up to 75 mph, and some tornadoes, are possible across portions of the Southeast and into the Carolinas Friday into Friday evening,” the Storm Prediction Center said Thursday afternoon. “The highest chance of high winds is over north and central Mississippi and far northwest Alabama Friday morning.”

The increased risk of severe weather is limited to the northwestern portion of Alabama.
