Jailed Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny made his first public appearance on a video call since his transfer to an Arctic penal colony.
Navalny was transferred to the IK-3 penal colony, nicknamed the “Polar Wolf,” in the northern town of Kharp, about 1,900 kilometers (1,200 miles) northeast of Moscow in December.
It is seen as one of Russia's toughest prisons, and most of the detainees held there have been convicted of serious crimes.
Speaking with reporters via video call, Navalny seemed in good spirits, and joked that he had not yet received any Christmas mail, because he was “completely far away.”
