A fatal shooting occurred on Sunday, January 7, 2024 at a home in Bessemer, around 10 a.m. local time. Two people were shot, and one person was reported injured. The victim who died in the shooting has been identified by the Jefferson County Coroner's Office as Brandon Jamal Nation III. He accompanied his mother home to get his hair cut.
The police began investigating the case and, as of Monday, had also questioned two people. However, no formal charges have been filed, and no arrests have been made to date.
The exact area where the accident occurred is 500 block of North Seventh Street. Brandon Jamal Nation III and the unidentified adult male were outside when the shooting began, Bessemer Police Detective Justin Burmeister told al.com.
“We know that someone who was not home fired shots toward the home.”
In addition, he stated,
“We are working tirelessly to gather all available information and evidence to determine the sequence of events that led to this tragic outcome.”
Brandon was pronounced dead at the hospital
According to al.com, Brandon and the barber were hit after several shots were fired. The 5-year-old was immediately transported to Children's Hospital of Alabama where he was pronounced dead around 12:40 p.m. local time. Al-Hallaq was also taken to hospital, where he survived, but was reported to be in critical condition.
Detective Burmeister said, expressing his sympathy:
“It's terrible. Our thoughts are with the family during this very difficult time.”
According to al.com, the death of 5-year-old Brandon Jamal Nation III ranks as the first homicide in Bessemer of 2024 and the third in all of Jefferson County. The three murders in the county reportedly occurred in a time period of just 24 hours. There were two murders on Saturday, in Birmingham and Fairfield.
