More than 800 flights were canceled today due to a dangerous winter storm hitting the United States

By CNN's Gregory Wallace and Pete Muntean

Winter weather in the eastern United States disrupted travel on Tuesday.

Airlines canceled more than 800 flights, and more than 4,200 flights were delayed, according to data from the FlightAware website.

Some of the canceled flights are due to the Boeing 737 Max 9 plane stopping flying after a terrifying accident on board one of its flights, where part of the plane exploded from the plane in the middle of the flight.

United Airlines told CNN it canceled 170 flights on Tuesday due to the Max plane accident.

Alaska Airlines did not say how many flights were canceled Tuesday due to the Max incident, but the airline has canceled between 140 and 170 flights per day since the FAA-mandated flight, pending aircraft inspections.

Citing the thunderstorms, the Federal Aviation Administration ordered a broad suspension of departures to Charlotte, which applies to airports from Texas to Indiana and from Miami to Washington, D.C.

Earlier todayThe Federal Aviation Administration also scheduled flights to Atlanta – the world's busiest airport – and Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas.

The Federal Aviation Administration warned of afternoon and evening turbulence along the East Coast from Florida to New York. Some flight routes were closed due to thunderstorms, which led to the suspension of some flights to Florida.

On the nation's railways, Amtrak canceled several East Coast trains on Tuesday and Wednesday. More than 17 Acela, Northeast Regional and Keystone trains have been canceled or shortened for today and tomorrow.
