The governor is making environmental conservation a priority in the state's future budget

In December, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the proposed 2024-2025 fiscal focus for Florida's future budget, reinforcing his commitment to supporting the mission of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to protect Florida's natural resources.

The budget will help provide Floridians with more opportunities for the outdoors and high-priority conservation items including coral reef restoration, abandoned ship removal, and habitat restoration initiatives.

The Governor's proposed budget includes more than $11.3 million and three new positions for initiatives supporting “Go Outdoors Florida,” the FWC's official licensing and permitting for hunting and fishing operations throughout the state.

Getting more Floridians outdoors has been a top priority for the Governor, and earlier this year, the Governor announced the Great Outdoors Initiative and signed an executive order to reduce the prices of state park permits and hunting and fishing licenses for FWC sportsmen by 50 percent. This initiative has achieved record success and the discounts will continue until January 13.

I want to thank Governor DeSantis for his commitment to our fish and wildlife resources. Florida is known around the world as the fishing and boating capital of the world, and because of the Governor's support, we will continue to provide opportunities for residents and visitors.

    Additional budget highlights include:
    • $1.3 million and seven new jobs for reef restoration and restoration.
    • $1.3 million and five new jobs to enhance shellfish and habitat resilience statewide.
    • $7 million for boating access and improvement projects.
    • $24.3 million for habitat restoration initiatives.
    • More than $500,000 and four new positions to enhance the response to harmful algal blooms.
    • $12.8 million and four new positions for land management activities.
    • $4.7 million for 12 new law enforcement positions for patrol and investigation.
    • $7.6 million to remove abandoned ships.
    • More than $350,000 for initiatives aimed at strengthening the resilience of saltwater fisheries.
    • $600,000 for artificial reefs.
