The woke police have been coming for James Bond for a long time.
The 2023 reprint of Ian Fleming's classic 1950s Bond books will feature rewritten passages to remove “racially insensitive” words and stereotypes, The Gateway Pundit reported.
The new edition also contained the disclaimer, “This book was written at a time when terms and attitudes that contemporary readers might find offensive were common.”
The disclaimer adds: “A number of updates have been made in this edition, keeping as close as possible to the original text and the period in which it is set.”
Now, the British Film Institute (BFI) is adding multiple caveats before paying homage to composer John Barry, whose catalog includes several Bond films.
The British Film Institute's snowflakes have issued a “ridiculous” alert to modern-day moviegoers, warning that 007 films may “cause offence” and upset modern-day film fans, the Daily Mail reported.
Film buffs attending a season of classic films have been warned that Bond's adventures would “cause offense today”, with big-screen hits such as Goldfinger and You Only Live Twice containing language and themes that were “mainstream” in the 1960s.
A note warning potential viewers has been installed outside the BFI Cinema LondonSouth Bank, the Telegraph reported. It says: “Please note that many of these films contain language, images or other content that reflects the prevailing views of their time but would cause offense today (as they did then).”
Titles have been included here for historical, cultural or aesthetic reasons, and these views are in no way endorsed by the BFI or its partners.'
Two Sean Connery-era Bond films for which Barry provided music, 1967's “You Only Live Twice” and 1964's “Goldfinger,” will feature a snowflake warning.
Author Douglas Murray suggests that “we seem to be run by 'cultural events' after the BFI decision.”
“I'm just trying to think back to the BFI films I've seen in the past,” Murray said.
“Now, if they're going to start putting warnings about James Bond, I think '120 Days of Sodom' probably needs another kind of heavy warning.”
