TEHRAN – The resignation of Yahya Gholmohammadi left Persepolis fans in a state of shock. At first, it seemed like another resignation, like the previous one, where discussions and promises would convince him to return, but this time it was certain.
Gulmohammadi, the head coach of Persepolis, resigned from his position. This decision comes after the club failed to meet its expectations, despite its intention to improve the team in the January transfer window.
Despite negotiations with Golmohammadi, Persepolis Club General Manager, Reza Darwish, did not achieve any specific results.
Reports indicate that Gulmohammadi's departure from Persepolis is imminent and irreversible.
While the reasons for his unexpected resignation remained unclear, two issues emerged: the first was the extension of his contract, and the second was the foreign offer. Golmohammadi's contract was extended twice under Jaafar Samiei and once under CEO Majid Sadri, but Reza Darwish has yet to follow suit after his nearly two-year spell at Persepolis.
It seems that Gul Mohammadi was waiting for the club to extend his contract for another two seasons, as his current contract was about to expire.
The 2023/24 Persian Gulf Professional League (PGPL) season will see Persepolis, Iran's most decorated football team, defend its title against strong contenders Esteghlal, Sepahan and Tractor.
The second topic was about an external symptom that may have been a strange and unexpected reason for his sudden departure. Although some sources denied any offers from the Arab Gulf countries, there are reports of Al-Shamal Club in Qatar’s interest in Gulmohammadi.
Golmohammadi's recent statement to the CEO indicates his decision to stop. After that, discussions about possible successors such as Branko Ivanković, Mehdi Tartar and even Dragan Skucic erupted in the Iranian media.
But General Manager Reda Darwish informed Gul Mohammadi that the club would not take any action in the coming days and asked him to announce his decision after a few days of rest.
