    In an age where human experience has become the rarest “resource” (besides time, of course) with immense value, generative AI is making a splash and is undoubtedly transforming interactions between humans, brands, and businesses. The foundation must be laid so that both species – humanity and AI – can work together to increase the likelihood of a better future.

    Specifically, AI use cases or narrow-band AI have been around for decades – and we've all heard Geoffrey Hinton speak. Simply put, Web2's household brands – such as FAANG stocks – Facebook (Meta), Amazon, Apple, Netflix, Google – have all exploited AI for profit.

    In this “age” of Web2, we humans, and specifically our data (of intentions, needs, and desires), were essentially the “products.” In short, our data has been monetized, often violating our privacy.

    Make no mistake, AI has been around for decades, seven to eight decades in fact, before generative AI or big language models made the big splash in 2022. What that means is that the power of AI has been and will continue to be. It is becoming increasingly democratic – in our hands or pockets, just a demand/speech/ask. But what's less clear is how we've shifted the perpetual gray line further to the left, producing more data to train new masters like OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Bard, and Meta's Lama 2.

    From chatbots that provide 24/7 customer support to personalized content recommendations, generative AI has the power to take the human experience to new heights. However, harnessing this transcendent power requires strict ethical practices and governance frameworks to ensure the well-being and privacy of human beings (customers, employees, and citizens).

    It should be known by now that generative AI hallucinates as it strives to provide us with the “best” answers possible – and sometimes makes things up along the way. All the more reason to have ethical guidelines and boundaries to guide our thoughts and actions, directing a positive growth path for what would become humanity's most disruptive invention. a period.

    We will delve into the importance of ethical AI frameworks and boundaries in human-centric AI applications, supported by examples across various industries – but we focus more on generative AI and MBA applications – although I cannot cover the cumulative ethical impact of AGI in This short article.

    Ethical AI Example #1: Personalized content recommendations

    Generative AI algorithms analyze user preferences and viewing history to suggest personalized content. While this certainly enhances the human experience, it also raises privacy concerns. There is a lot of debate among experts about the scope of data: first-party data, third-party data, etc. For example, ChatGPT was trained using text databases from the Internet. This included 570 gigabytes of data obtained from books, Wikipedia web texts, articles and other online writings. Going back to 2022, and even then, the results were amazing, and OpenAI was able to amass millions of users within weeks. We are now grappling with synthetic data, that is, data that has been synthesized by AI itself for training purposes.

    AI Ethical Example #2: Virtual Assistants and Chatbots

    Many e-commerce platforms use chatbots powered by generative AI to help customers. The ethical boundaries here lie in transparency, as customers must be made aware that they are interacting with a chatbot, not a human. Ethical governance ensures that companies are clear about the nature of these interactions. E-commerce giants like Amazon and Shopify use generative AI, for example, Shopify Magic to help sellers write product descriptions. There is a risk here that fake content, images or even reviews (!!!) can cause financial and reputational damage, not to mention degradation of the human experience!

    AI Ethical Example #3: Content Creation

    Marketing and advertising

    Generative AI can automate the content creation process for marketing campaigns, improving efficiency and consistency. However, ethical boundaries are crucial in preventing the spread of false or misleading information. Governance frameworks ensure that AI-generated content complies with ethical advertising standards. There have been several cases of generative AI violating copyright, for example, Getty Images sued the creators of AI art over the Stable Diffusion tool for deleting their content

    AI Ethical Example #4: Healthcare and Telemedicine

    AI-based virtual healthcare assistants are on the rise, providing medical information and even diagnosis. Ethical practices require that obstetric AI in healthcare adhere to strict regulations to protect patient privacy, maintain accurate diagnosis, and avoid any medical misinformation. There is growing concern that generative AI is raising concerns about medical malpractice in unexpected ways. The use of AI-generated private or confidential information is something we should be particularly careful about, for example, entering patient-specific information may constitute a violation of HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and lead to various legal problems. In the near future, doctors will likely spend more time on empathy — things like breaking news, counseling, family members' mental health, etc., leaving more and more parts of medical work to robots and AI.

    AI Ethical Example #5: Social Media Engagement

    Spam is unsolicited commercial emails aimed at urging us to buy something, click on links, install malware, or change our views. A single email blast can generate $1,000 in just a few hours. Advances in artificial intelligence now mean that spammers can replace traditional hit-or-miss tactics with more targeted and persuasive messages. All of this is possible thanks to AI's easy access to social media posts.

    A recent report from Europol predicts that 90% of Internet content will be generated by artificial intelligence within a few years. Misinformation depletes trust, which supports the accumulated and positive human experience.

    Ethical AI Example 6: Financial Services

    Banking and financial services

    AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants are becoming increasingly prevalent in the financial sector. Ethical practices require clear measures to protect data and prevent unfair or discriminatory practices. Governance frameworks can ensure that AI applications adhere to these ethical guidelines. These concerns include inherent bias and privacy shortcomings, ambiguity around how results are generated, issues of power, cybersecurity, and the impact of artificial intelligence on broader financial stability.

    One important challenge facing AI systems is inherent bias, especially in a highly regulated and sensitive sector like financial services. Embedded bias can be defined as computer systems that systematically and unfairly discriminate against certain individuals or groups of individuals in favor of others. In the financial sector, which increasingly relies on AI-powered decisions, inherent bias can lead, among other things, to unethical practices, financial exclusion, and damage to public trust.

    Ensuring ethical AI: Balancing technological advancement, ethical governance, and customer trust

    In summary, generative AI holds great promise in enhancing the human experience across various industries, but its implementation must be guided by ethical practices and governance frameworks. As we have seen in these examples, issues of privacy, transparency, accuracy, and fairness must be carefully addressed. Failure to set these ethical boundaries can result in potential harm to customers, from privacy violations to misinformation.
