Portland, Oregon has a serious homelessness problem and it's about to get worse. Much worse.
Shigella is spreading in the city, mostly through the homeless population, and to make matters worse, it is spread in a disgusting way, through feces.
Aside from the moral issue of allowing people to live on the street, one of the biggest issues is the threat to public health. That's why you don't want a large number of people living in tents and using the streets as bathrooms.

Portland, Oregon, is facing a cluster of highly contagious diseases that spread through feces and is putting the city's large homeless population at high risk, according to health officials.
“Although we are currently seeing an increase in shigella cases in the Portland metro area, the risk to the broader public remains low at this time and there are no actions most people can take at this time,” said Theresa Iverson, Multnomah County Deputy Health Officer. “The best thing we can all do to prevent viral respiratory and diarrheal illnesses is to continue to practice good hand hygiene,” commented on Fox News Digital.
Portland and surrounding areas have shut down 2023 with 227 documented cases of shigella disease, Multnomah County health officials told Fox News Digital on Thursday, 45 of which occurred in December alone. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) describes shigella as a bacteria found in feces that can infect a person if ingested. The disease can cause people to have prolonged bloody diarrhea, fever, stomach pain, and “a feeling of needing to pass stools even when the bowels are empty.”
Shigella can be spread by having sex, drinking contaminated water, changing diapers, or caring for someone who has the disease.
