Sun and fun for Biden as the southern border is under siege
While most presidents criticize their vacations, due to the perception that elites hang around while society's working people get a few token paid days off each year, most presidents do not go on vacation when their country is under invasion.
Hill reports:
Republicans are attacking President Biden for taking a family vacation on St. Croix amid a border crisis, arguing that it shows how absent the White House is on the issue.
…
“Joe Biden is on vacation in the Virgin Islands while the southern border is in crisis,” Rep. Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) said in a statement this week, while Rep. Tom Tiffany (R-Wis.) criticized Biden for being “on vacation again.” While our southern border is being invaded by illegal aliens.
“Joe Biden is soaking up the sun in the Caribbean as an army of illegal aliens storms our southern border. “Don't be fooled, this is what the radical left has always wanted,” said Arizona Rep. Andy Biggs (R).
The White House declined to comment on the latest criticism, but one of Biden's allies criticized Republicans, noting that Trump played golf regularly during his administration. Trump has likely played 261 rounds of golf as president, according to Washington Post estimates.
President Trump has played a fair number of rounds, but the limits have been getting better. Biden, on the other hand, has had record bad months in record bad years.
After returning from vacation, Biden announced that the administration would open more ports of entry during the invasion crisis.
Freshman Republican Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) summed up what most of the president's opponents were likely feeling after learning the news:
Not a good look for Biden
It remains to be seen whether this issue has positive political significance for Republicans. People of all political stripes tend to get upset when they see their nation crumbling while elites enjoy the sun.
But whether the president will relax when his country's borders are under siege remains to be seen.
