20-year-old Alyssa Healy and fellow opener did not need long to find form at the crease after Australia won the toss and elected to bat first in Mumbai.
The opening pair formed a stunning partnership of 189 before Healy departed for 89 in the 29th over after being bowled by Pooja Vastrakar.
It was India who had the momentum after that as Australia lost three wickets for seven runs to sit at 4/216.
However, Litchfield and Ash Gardner steadied the ship and combined for a 50-run partnership before Litchfield's epic innings came to an end with the final ball of the 40th over.
Gardner, Annabelle Sutherland, Georgia Wareham and Alana King in Australia's middle order all chipped in vital runs to help set India a massive target of 339 for victory.

But India's chase got off to a disastrous start, losing five wickets for 98 runs as Megan Schutt and Georgia Wareham tore up the top order with two wickets each.
However, the most memorable wicket was undoubtedly that of Amanjot Kaur, who departed for just three runs thanks to Litchfield's ridiculous catch.
Corr looked to smash King's cross-court delivery but managed to lift it.
Despite the ball moving quickly, Litchfield darted to her right and caught the ball out of the air with her right hand.
After Kaur's departure, there was little resistance from India who had no answer for Australia.
A four-wicket collapse for 46 runs ended India's innings as Australia dismissed them for just 148 runs.
